Acolytes:
The Acolyte is a vital part of the traditional worship service at First Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach and includes youth, grades 3-12. The contemporary service does not employ ABC’s, but those who attend the contemporary service are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Frequency of scheduling depends completely upon the number of volunteers in any ministry.
Why do we light and extinguish candles during worship?
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus’ coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into worship as a symbol of Jesus’ coming into the presence of the worshiping community. At the end of the service, the light is carried out into the world symbolizing the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are to serve.

Why do we need a Bible bearer and what is the importance of a processional Bible?
The Bible bearer brings God’s Holy Word to the altar as we come together to study the scriptures. We believe the writers of the Bible were inspired, that they were filled with God’s Spirit as they wrote the truth to the best of their knowledge. We believe the Holy Spirit works today in our thoughtful study of the scriptures, especially as we study them together, seeking to relate the old words to life’s present realities. God speaks to us through the Bible.

What is the importance of a CRUCIFER and why do we use a processional cross?
The Cross represents the Lord’s presence at the altar. The processional cross is brought up to the altar or Chancel by a crucifer at the beginning of the traditional worship service and placed at the altar. The acolytes, Bible bearer, choir and clergy follow and then bow to the cross at the altar. The processional cross is tall and heavy; therefore, it is carried by older youth.

Communion Helpers:
Volunteers who answer the God's call to serve Holy Communion will have the privilege to be able to offer this symbol of God's grace to others in our congregation. It is one of the two sacraments of the church, and we know you will want to treat it with due respect. In the scriptures you will find that the elements were always given by Jesus, not "taken‟ by the disciples. We respect this by always "giving‟ the bread and cup and never asking people to take it.

Ushers:
When guests arrive after worship has begun, ushers invite them to enter the sanctuary at a time to avoid interruption of a service. Their most important job may be to keep track of available seats and guide attendees to them. This is an essential function when the church is full. During the service, ushers collect the monetary offerings by passing the collection vessels. After the service, they count the money collected. As custodians of church money, honesty and integrity are important characteristics.
